Speaking Club
The ability to speak well in public, conduct negotiations and deal with customers effectively is difficult to overestimate. Company's success and productivity often depend on the ability of its staff to receive, evaluate and pass on information. One of the main objectives in learning foreign languages is to acquire speaking skills.
It is to meet these needs that the English Speaking Club was established.
The first session was held on February 10, 2007. In 2010, October 9, we celebrated the 125th meeting by awarding Veteran and Super Veteran medals to the most active participants!
Club members developed the Charter and the Ñode of Ñonduct where it is stated that participants should be friendly, supportive and tolerant towards each other, restrain criticism, be open to new ideas and ready to cooperate.
How the Club operates
We meet on Saturdays from 10:30 till 13:00.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are a part of procedure.
Our approach to running the Speaking Club differs from that of academic classes. There are neither home assignments nor textbooks. Instead, we use a variety of vocabulary games, communication exercises, role-plays and jokes. During the role-plays and discussions participants need to agree and disagree with each other, contradict, persuade, complain, apologize, express their likes and dislikes. We teach them how to communicate effectively and use the language as a tool for networking.
In the course of sessions participants work in pairs or in small teams. The role of a teacher is to be a moderator and observer, so teachers’ speaking time is reduced to minimum. Sometimes native speakers are also invited to take part in Club sessions.
Who can be a Club member
Initially we aimed our Club activities at former MIM students but later the Club doors opened for any adult persons who want to acquire or improve their speaking skills.
To join the club it is desirable to have background knowledge at intermediate (+/-) level. Your first visit is free of charge if you don’t stay with us. For further information call (044) 585 0275 or write to ludiva@mim.kiev.ua
